What is Open Source Software?
Open source is a set of principles and practices that promote access to the design and production of goods and knowledge. The term is most commonly applied to the source code of software that is available to the general public with relaxed or non-existent intellectual property restrictions. This allows users to create software content through incremental individual effort or through collaboration. Open Source Software is software for which the underlying programming code is available to the users so that they may read it, make changes to it, and build new versions of the software incorporating their changes. There are many types of Open Source Software, mainly differing in the licensing term under which (altered) copies of the source code may (or must be) redistributed. Open source software allows for anyone with programming experience to revise and change the programming code to suit their individual needs. It allows to fully customize your settings. Many of today's popular software programs once started as an open source software program. For example: Linux, Firefox and many more. Open Source Software usually is licensed under GNU General Public License.
The use of Open Source Software (OSS) is, for most organisations, the most effective way to reduce costs and improve system reliability and security.
We use GNU/Linux as Open Source operating system in IT infrastructures because:
- Linux rarely fails - mean time between failures is measured in months and often years;
- OSS is secure by design - it is being used by the USA Government for secure computing;
- Linux is virus resistant by design;
- OSS is designed to interwork - published interfaces and no hidden code; no forced change - OSS is written to ensure backwards compatibility; low cost or free licence fees;
- OSS is free from vendor lock in and vendor churn;
- Linux runs on the latest powerful, low cost, 64 bit commercial off the shelf processors;
- Linux runs well on low performance PCs that do not need fans for cooling.
